How seniors are hitting the floor in a new way!

Issues with balance and coordination are common as we age. Falls can result from changes in the heart rhythm, visual system, and musculoskeletal system. They can also stem from a stroke. The sensation of vertigo can result from an infection or misalignment of the crystals in the inner ear. Dizziness should never be ignored because there are solutions.

I) Dizziness is common with normal activities

Orthostatic hypotension is the term used for the drop in blood pressure that occurs when a person goes form lying to standing.  Since thirst diminishes with age, medications like diuretics can exacerbate the risk of dehydration.

II) Options for your patients
Simple lifestyle changes can make a profound difference. Proper medication reconciliation can identify potential culprits of dizziness such as diuretics, benadryl, sedatives and even alpha blockers used in BPH benign prostatic hypertrophy. Seniors should remain hydrated if there are no heart issues. They can don fashionable compression stockings and ensure they never leave home without their extra set of rollator walker wheels!

III) Hit the floor

Benign positional vertigo is easily treated with a referral to vestibular rehabilitation. Physical therapists also do an amazing job of teaching balance and resistance exercises. Sassy and savvy can prevent falls by ensuring their vitamin D stores are full, and by engaging in regular exercise. They can relish the benefits of TAI CHI, salsa dancing, and YOGA which are ideal for teaching muscle memory.
